Please join us on April 26th at 6:00 pm for the Benefit Concert. A blue flyer went home with all the details. All proceeds benefit STOP POACHING NOW! Click here for more information. I just wanted to update you on a few things. We started our practice tests yesterday in class for the state tests. This will help your scholars become familiar with the tests and feel comfortable with the equipment we will be using.
Starting April 20 through 28, I will not be assigning written homework. Your scholar's homework will be to get a good night's sleep, eat breakfast, and bring a silent reading book to be prepared for the tests they will take throughout that time period. If you would like more information about the testing or practice sites, Mrs. Findley and Mr. Foldvary have been sending messages about testing, so please check your email. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you! Today we started to test out Google Classroom in class. Google Classroom is a tool to promote communication and collaboration, turn in work, and take quizzes online. I could post a question and scholars could answer the question, view others' responses, and comment on others' responses. We spoke about online safety and leaving behind a positive digital footprint. Google Classroom is a closed website that only the teacher and students of the teacher can communicate. No one else can join the class or scholars cannot add someone else to the class. Tonight's homework assignment could be completed on Google Classroom or on paper.
Scholars can access Google Classroom through Clever. https://clever.com/in/beverly-hills-unified-sch-dist Clever is another great tool to automatically log scholars into useful websites such as Benchmark Education for any Language Arts books or extra reading books, Code.org, or typing.com. There are also other resources listed for scholars to use at home. Your scholars may also access the G-Suite apps (Google apps) as well. I am so thankful for scholars that want to learn. Thank you for attending the parent conferences. We are thankful for your support! We are starting a new unit in Language Arts. Ask your scholars what topic we are studying.
This past week, we self-evaluated ourselves on the green screen project as a review for our science test. Some results from scholars were some scholars learn well from peer videos, scholars that create the videos for each specific lesson did well on that section of the test, and others felt if their peers that recorded the video did not understand the lesson they presented, the video was difficult to follow. We will continue to use the green screen to create other projects, so please continue to pick up an extra straw at your next Starbucks visit! Time Management...We have discussed time management quite a bit in class. If scholars are feeling they have too much homework, they can reduce the amount of time they can read for the night. Also if there is a study guide given for a test or quiz, this is not optional. These study guides, practice tests, or questions are a part of homework and are included on the homework board and should be written down in the agenda. Homework should be completed every night. I am looking forward to seeing you and your scholars at your scheduled parent conference. Yesterday, one of our scholars logged into the Pearson website to demonstrate how to access the math textbook and other resources online. There are also enrichment pages that correspond with the topics we are covering in class. Here are the steps to log in. Your scholars should have their information in their agenda/planner.
If you have any questions, please email me. College Shirt Day is now on Wednesdays at Horace Mann School! Don't forget to wear your college shirt tomorrow.
The first month and a half of 5th grade has been great! We have had quizzes, tests, and completed the STEM module called Robotics and Automation. Your scholars were asked to share their Launch Log with you. As engineers, they went through the Engineer Design Process to solve a problem. They built a chassis with VEX IQ kits and then had to modify their chassis to move environmental waste to a collection zone. Some photos from over the last three weeks are on this website.
Since Ms. Richardson came in the morning to co-teach STEM, we have not had our normal routine. We are back to our normal routine now and will resume our regular schedule. More math and writing homework can now be assigned. Students should always read 20-30 minutes a night along with their other assigned homework. On Monday, a few tests will come home. Please sign these tests and have your scholars return them to me. We are beginning Water Cycle and Weather in science. We will be using a green screen for this project. If you find yourself at Starbucks in the next few weeks, can you pick up an extra straw? We are going to use these for our project. Your scholars can explain why we would need that specific straw. A few weeks ago, I sent an email with my updated email address. It is [email protected]. Please email me if you have any questions. |
